A National Implementation of CUSP

photo99,000 people die due to health care-associated infections every year in the United State and nearly 28 to 33 billion dollars are spent on these infections nationwide. Stop BSI and Stop CAUTI aim to eliminate central line associated blood stream infections (CLABSI) and catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) and their associated costs. We invite consumers, insurers, employers, clinicians, and administrators to join this effort. Together we will save countless lives, prevent suffering, and reduce healthcare costs.

We are pleased to announce that AHRQ has allocated resources for states participating in On the CUSP: Stop BSI to support project coordination at the state level.  Each participating state hospital association or other state coordinating entity may obtain up to $70,000 to support involvement in the two-year project.

Cohort 5 states are getting ready to implement On the CUSP: Stop BSI with their first of six weekly immersion calls starting on September 30, 2010. Several new and participating states will join Cohort 5 as they expand their Stop BSI program to new hospitals and units within their state.

Starting in 2011, hospitals will be required to report ICU bloodstream infection data to the CDC, and in late 2011, hospital-level data will be posted on Hospital Compare.  In 2012, Medicare reimbursement will be tied to infection reduction.
